My cat is a rescue cat from a dumpster on Winchester. She apparently has been terribly abused and has intestinal problems. She has been fixed and has had all shots. I have not been successful in domesticating her. She has yet to allow me to touch her in the 6 months I have had her. She apparently has never encountered the milk of human kindness although I have given her the best possible care within my financial means, and as much loving care as she will allow me to give her, which is very little. She hides most of the time. She is in desperate need of medical attention for intestinal problems, which I can no longer afford. If there is anyone in the Memphis area who will take pity on this poor animal, please call and give her a good home and the medical attention she so desperately needs.

Adoption fee is $70.00 for cats and $75.00 for dogs. This fee includes the micochipping of every dog and cat adopted. Cash or check ONLY - NO credit cards. The fee includes heartworm test, spay/neuter, and rabies, parvo, and distemper shots for dogs and spay/neuter, vaccinations, and FeLV and FIV testing for cats. Does anybody on here know if there is a top number of dogs that you can have in Memphis? I called the Animal Shelter, and they said they weren't sure. I have a neighbor who does rescue work and has at least 16 dogs at her house that I have counted. I was just wondering if there was a number you had to stop at.

Hi there...Let me tell you my story...

My human moved into an apartment...man that place was small and there was no yard to play in anymore...then I heard the apartment manager say I had to go! Go?? Go where???

Then I hopped in the car and off we went. I love car rides...so much to see and sniff...They are loads of fun...usually...

My human took me to the doctor and got lots of shots, and they took some blood, and poked my bottom. I didn't like that too much. They all smiled and say I was negative. I am very optimistic, so I am not sure why they would tell me I am negative! I always see the silver lining around the food bowl.

Anyway I stayed there for while. I mean like forever! Probably a whole dog year! Well, maybe I am exaggerating but it sure felt like I was there forever! Then I began to hear them whispering about "putting me down." I know how to lay down...if they would just ask I would gladly show them what I can do. And I have very good hearing. Don't they know I can hear them when they whisper?

About a week ago, in human days, they gave me another shot. It made me sleepy. When I woke up I had the worst pain in my stomach and was very woozy. The nice nurse said it was "spayed" now...I have no idea what that means...but it hurt and I don't wanna get spayed again!

Then the next day, a lady who had been visiting me up here and playing with me took me home! I was so happy to be out of the vets office. They are really nice to me there, but the place is just no fun!

I like being at this new place. There are other dogs to play with and they have swimming pools just for the dogs! But the nice lady told me I would only be here until she found me a "forever home". Then she went on to say how she is trying to find me my own family that will love me for the rest of my life! How awesome would that be! Then I looked at her and tilted my head. I swear she can read my mind! She looked at me and said, "Of course I love you...I love all the dogs here, but our goal is to find you your special family and I will work very hard to find them. They are out there somewhere. And I promise that I won't let you leave until I find the perfect home for you. You will stay here with us until we find your family. I promise." WOW! Then she kissed me on my nose and let my go outside to play with my buddies for a little while.

She lets me hang out in the house, so I am extra careful not to make any messes. Some of the other dogs make messes, but not me. I like it when I can sneak up in the bed and sleep with my temp mom and dad. The bed is soooo soft!!! They mumble something about me "hogging it up" then roll over and we start snoring again. Man they snore almost as loud as the old grouchy beagle that lives here!

My "temp" mom said to make sure you email her to find out more about me.

I found a border collie mix (possibly full blood) female dog today running in traffic at the crossroads of Poplar and Highland near the Petco. I looked for her owner for some time and could not find anyone. She has been groomed recently and was wearing a collar. If anyone is looking for this dog PLEASE call me at 901-550-0698 She is very sweet but a lot skittish. Appears housebroken. I can only keep her for a day or so before turning her into the shelter but I am trying hard to find her owner or a foster home first! Pebbles was dumped by a backyard breeder. Someone saw this "guy" push Pebbles out of his back yard. When asked why? He replied he couldn't sell her so he didn't need her anymore. Poor Pebbles...

Pebbles is shy at first and a bit slow to warm up. She is hesitant of new people, and needs someone who is going to be patient with her and provide her with lots of TLC. She seems nervous in new situations and sudden noises or movements startle her. Pebbles does ok on walks, but is still on edge when we are out and about in our neighborhood. Poor thing always seems stressed out when we leave the house. It seems like the only place she is truly at ease is in her kennel, on our couch, or in the back yard playing with her k9 buddies. Pebbles is playful with the other dogs in the house. Pebbles LOVES to be outside on nice warm days and LOVES to play in the kiddie pools. She's kennel trained and house broken, but she needs to be kenneled when left alone or she can get into puppy mischief! She is still young and likes to chew! She has been good with older kids.

Pebbles will need a home that is patient with her. She is slow to warm up and will take several weeks to acclimate to her new surroundings. During the transition, she may have potty accidents or get into mischief so we strongly recommend kenneling/crating her when she will be left alone for long periods of time.

Pebbles is up-to-date on shots, heartworm negative and on preventative, spayed, and on Frontline+. References and fence yard required. Adoption fee designed to defray some of the expenses with getting her altered and ready for her forever home. Please email for more information.

Wilbur and Hiram are looking for forever homes. Both boys are black lab mix puppies and are about 10wks old. They were rescued for different situations and are not brothers. They are in separate foster homes and will be adopted out individually. Both boys are up to date on age appropriate shots and dewormed. Their adoption includes the remainder of the puppy shots, their rabies shot and tag, and their neuter.

Wilbur was abandoned at Berclair Animal Hospital when he was just 4-5 weeks old. He is almost totally crate trained and is working on house training. He is in a foster home with young children and other dogs. Wilbur is a sweet lil guy and will probably be a medium size dog when full grown. The vet guesstimated he will be between 35-45lb. He is solid black with a few bits of white in his "arm-pits."

Hiram (pronounced HI-rum)was found on the side of the road by a good Samaritan. He is a black lab mix puppy with a white blaze on his chest. Hiram is totally crate trained and almost house trained. He hasn't had but one accident in his foster families home. Hiram is being fostered in a home with other dogs and young children and is doing great. He is very laid back and just sorta goes with the flow. The vet guesstimated he will be a large dog full grown and that his weight will be around 55-65lbs.

Adoption application, references, home visit and fee required. The adoption includes ALL of the necessary puppy shots, dewormings, rabies shot and tag, and neuter when age appropriate (usually at 4 months).

Hi, I already know about the APA and Memphis Humane Society's spay and neuter programs. I was wondering if anyone else knows any other places or vets that do low cost spay neuter. I am trying to make a list to give out in neighborhoods where people can't afford a lot of money to get this done.

I have met some people thru my chruch that want to work on this and we are trying to put together a list to help get some more animals spayed and neutered.

Please Help Oreo. Our neighbors moved and left her behind and we are moving ourselves saturday to Florida and cannot take her along. The neighbors left her 6-21 and we kept her until the Memphis Humane Society was supposed to take her but they said they cannot take her now because they are full. All the backyard rescues say they are full too. Now we have until Saturday to find her a home. I will not take her to the shelter. I will let her go and hope she makes it before I take her to the shelter. I doubt she will last long as she has been fed out of a can her whole life. Please, someone give her a home. She HAS been fixed and seems perfectly healthy, maybe a little fat. I dont know if she has been given her yearly shots. She is a very loving and sweet cat. we have 2 rat terriers and a min pin that have been jumping and biting at her and she is very tolerant of them and just lets them jump all over her like it doesnt bother her. my one year old pulls on her ears and tail and she really doesnt care so she's great with dogs and kids! My boyfriend and I rescued a beautiful puppy in the Chelsea area off Boxwood and Belmont on July 16. We think she is a German shepherd and Chau Chau mix. She has bronze/brown hair. BEAUTIFUL! We took her to the vet today and she received her first round of shots and frontline. She is in excellent conditions! NO heartworms! The vet thinks she is only 3 months old because she still has all her puppy teethes. We all named her Chelsea!!!! Our new friend received her first bubble bath and she cried a lot, but she behaved and was a good girl. She is now refreshed and clean. She is very playful. If we don't find a home for Chelsea in the next few days, we will have to call an animal shelter. We owned a Rottweiler, who we rescued a year ago, and a mini Poodle. Bella is a stray found near my home in Arlington, TN. She is part Chow and part Retriever. She is good, playful and sweet with adult females and children. Does not like Adult males. Sidney is a dog that I found roaming the streets of Memphis. I have been unable to find any owners and cannot keep her for myself. She is about 1.5 to 2 years old. I am not sure what other breed she has in her, but she is small, only 40lbs. She is great with the dog I currently have, and I am sure that she would make a wonderful family pet. I just had her fixed so no need to worry about that. She is very calm and quiet and seems to be house broke. I walk her several times a day, but only seems to go once which is amazing to me! All I want is someone loving to take her in and care for her. She and I both can't wait to meet you!

Also there are rescue groups that promote breeding. NO QUESTION about that one either! Some rescues just see nothing wrong with breeding, and will do so to make money. You are either in it to help the anmals or to make money.

but the lady who's post keeps getting flagged rescued a BEAUTIFUL dog from the vets office where they worked. The owner had to move into an apartment and just brought the perfectly HEALTHY and FIXED dog to the clinic and asked them to destroy it. Instead of destroying this animal that could be a PERFECT pet for someone, they decided to find it a good home free of charge. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THAT??? I recently acquired a great dog from a local rescue. What I've discovered is that people are breeding dogs and selling them through some of these rescues. These dogs are almost always pure breed and great dogs. They'll say the dogs are a mix of something and how the dog was found in whatever conditions. But, these dogs are bred from the same dog types. Not complaining, but I think this is a sneaky way to have a non-profit agency and a glorified way of selling dogs out of your home and beating the system. Just my two cents.

My aunt rescued six kittens from underneath her neighbors garage floor. She has kept them healthy and had them all NEUTERED!!! That is the BIG BONUS HERE not to mention the fact that they are absolutely beautiful!! There are two orange tabbys, a few that are grey tuxedo style, and a few that are grey and white with stripes in the grey. The mother is a Siamese so all the kittens have those beautiful blue eyes. Since these little guys have been neutered, you could just get one or two for outside cats to keep the mice down and not have to worry about them reproducing, or have them as inside pets and not have to worry about they spraying. Again, the BIG PLUS here is that these guys are FIXED!!! There is NO CHARGE, she just wants them to get good homes.

Am desperately seeking information about a dog that was hit by car 7/5/2008 around 9:00PM on Hwy-64 near I-40 interchange/Rockcreek Pkwy. We have been running ad in commercial appeal for our red, female Husky who went missing earlier that same evening. I have recently received a call from a nice person who said she came upon scene evening of 7/5 where police were redirecting traffic because a large dog had been hit. May have been our dog but I have called animal services and everywhere else and cannot get any information if a dog was hit, and if so, what happened to her.

She had tags/collar with name/address/phone but no one has called.

If you were in the area the evening of 7/5 near Hwy-64/I-40/Rockcreek Pkwy and saw anything PLEASE let us know.

I have 2 Ball Pythons I am trying to find a new home for. There is one female and one male. Both have great color and are around 3 feet long. I was told they were about 1/2 year old when i got them and if this is true they are around 3-3 1/2 years old. They have never been bred; they have tried to, but i have never been one to breed snakes. I have had snakes all my life and hate to see them go, but have no room for them where i am now and i work to much to give them the attention they need. I am asking for a $200 re homing fee. If this is to much i will consider less of an offer as long as they are going to the right person. I would not ask this, but i am selling them with the cage and everything in it (rocks, water bowl, greenery, heating pads..). The lamp i was using for them stopped working on me, but i do have 2 other heating lamps if needed. Due to my work, study, and kids, I can no longer afford to keep this loveable dog. He is house trained, current on all shots, and microchiped. Abby is a great dog who doesn't realize she's actually a dog. She's been treated as a human for her entire life and is quite set in her ways. She is a wonderful companion, fully trained and just as sweet as apple pie! She would do best in an adult only home, with or without cats, but no other dogs or children. Abby is a perfect companion for a senior citizen or single person, or couple.

Abby is:
* fully house trained
* voice trained (HATES LEASHES-- doesn't need one)
* quiet, but will bark when someone is at the door or if you say 'who is it??'
* accustomed to sleeping in bed with someone at night
* trained to turn circles at the door when she needs to go outside, and will do the same if you say 'do you want to go outside?'
* a cat lover- no barking or chasing cats.
* accustomed to being allowed on furniture, but will get off if she is instructed 'OFF!'
* not usually one to 'jump up' on people if they come in, but if she gets over-excited and does it, she'll stop if you say 'down'

She will even let you know when she's thirsty by jumping into the bathtub and turning circles (she likes the tap to be turned on a 'steady drip' and will drink from that!).

She is being surrendered because the person who has had her for her entire life now has an infant, and after months of working with Abby, there has been no improvement in Abby's negative attitude and behavior toward the baby. Abby has never liked children, though she has never bitten one, she has growled and bared her teeth to them.

Abby would be a wonderful companion for a single person or an older person who is just looking for someone to love and someone to love them back! Abby is definitely a lover!

Abby should:

* Be kept inside all the time, except when she goes out to potty.
* Be the only dog in a household.
* Not be around small children (recommended no children under 10)
* Be placed with someone who can spend several hours with her playing, petting and loving every day.
* Only be given all-natural dog food (currently eats 'Innova' brand Senior Formula & 'Mother Nature' treats) and NEVER any human food. Abby has some stomach issues and food allergies and must be kept on her current diet. NO EXCEPTIONS! Other foods and people food make her violently ill!

There are 3 dog parks that have off leash areas that I know of:

Shelby Farms
Entrance off of Trinity Rd near Germantown Parkway.
Not fenced in (well all of Shelby Farms is fenced in (like 5000 acres) but the dog area isn't) and unless you have absolute control of you dog I would not go there, but it has a lake for doggie swimming and lots of space, just easy to get lost if the dog isn't 100% responsive to voice commands.

Fogey Park in Germantown
Take Neshoba West from Germantown Parkway, Turn left onto Riverdale, you can see dog park from Riverdale, turn right into the neighborhood, just past the dog park, then the next right to get to the parking area for the dog park. Completely fenced in area, has both large and small dog areas.

Bartlett Dog Park
Located next to the Bartlett Shelter.
Take Sycamore View north (exit 12 off I40)It turns into Bartlett Blvd then Billy Maher. Take to end and turn right onto Old Brownsville, Take next left infront of the school, then 2 right onto Shelter Run Lane. It looks like an alley way and has 6-8ft wooden fencing on either side. Go past one stop sign and the road brings out right to the dog park, located next to the Bartlett shelter.
ONLY BRING ADULT DOGS TO THIS PARK.
The shelter volunteers and staff let the shelter dogs play in these areas so only fully vetted adult dogs should go. There is a small and large dog area.

Is there anybody who could donate a couple hours a month that could help with letting us learn about training our rescue dogs? We don't have enough money to pay, but it would help a lot for us to place our dogs. We know there are classes that cost money, but with all our vet bills we just can't pay anything more right now. We took a dog with injuries from being hit by a car and that has wiped up out for right now of extra money. We sure would appreciate it.

There will be dogs and puppies from a local rescue at Lil John's Animall today from 11am-3pm. Lil John's is on Germantown Rd at Dexter in between Huey's and El Porton.

All dogs/puppies are up to date on shots, fixed (if old enough otherwise will be when age appropriate), on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. Most dogs are house and/or crate trained, good with other dogs, some are good with cats and kids.

Adoption application, vet and/or professional references, contract, home inspection, interview, and fee required.

We put our heart, souls, and a lot of time and money into rehabilitating these dogs and want to be sure they are going to a forever home that is at least as good as what their foster home can provide.
