The Education Program for Gifted Youth (EPGY) at Stanford University is entering the third year of a collaborative project with Memphis City Schools, in which the computer-based courses developed by Stanford EPGY are being used at schools throughout the city of Memphis.

Responsibilities:

The School Support Associate (SSA) will be a member of the Stanford-Memphis collaborative team, consisting of Stanford University employees located both in Memphis and at Stanford, as well as employees of the Memphis City Schools. The SSA will be responsible for supporting the use of the Stanford EPGY Language Arts and Writing Courses within the Memphis City Schools and therefore must reside in the Memphis area.

The support delivered to schools will be provided both through electronic means such as phone and email, and through site visits. This support will range from delivering professional development to teachers regarding effective use of the courses, to helping schools maintain implementation of the courses, to evaluating student use of the program within schools, to providing minor technical support as needed. Throughout the academic year, the SSA will be responsible for playing an active role in ensuring that effective program use and efficient program performance are maintained. This includes intervening when instructional and/or technical problems arise, both to ensure accurate identification of the source of the problem, and to ensure that steps are taken to address the problem.

The SSA, as a representative of Stanford University within the Memphis City Schools will play a key role in ensuring that the implementation of the Stanford EPGY Language Arts and Writing Course is successful. Qualifications:

A bachelor’s degree is required, preferably in English or a comparable subject in which clear written communication is an essential aspect. Experience working in Title I schools is also highly desirable. While not required, current Memphis teacher certification is desirable, as is prior experience working in the Memphis City Schools.

The SSA must have familiarity with standard computer applications such as MS Word, MS Excel, other MS Office applications, email, and so forth. Familiarity with Windows and Mac OS X is required. Additionally, the SSA will be expected to acquire a detailed understanding of the functioning of the EPGY software and its optimal configuration in school settings, and with EPGY’s internal workflow systems.

The SSA must have good oral and written communication skills. Experience giving presentations, writing reports, and training personnel is highly desired. The SSA must have a strong customer service attitude and be able to provide professional and courteous support to frustrated and possibly antagonistic users. The SSA should project an air of collegiality.

Since this position will work on school grounds and will require moving between schools, applicants must have a suitable means of transportation available to them during the day. Additionally, applicants will be required to satisfy any requirements, e.g. criminal background check, that the Memphis City Schools place on regular visitors to school premises.
A glimpse at Korea:
Korea is a unique mix of sophisticated commercial centers and impressive, traditional attractions. A history and culture that goes back nearly 5,000 years coexists side by side with Louis Vuitton and Starbucks. An eclectic mix of mountains and rivers, majestic palaces, and ultramodern skyscrapers highlight the country's unique horizon.

Also known as the "most wired" country in the world, Korea is famous for its Internet connectivity and the leadership role it plays in the IT industry. As the 10th largest economy in the world, anyone can find just about anything in Korea. For example, English books and movies are readily available along with a variety of Western foods from take-outs to family restaurants.

For the adventurer, Korea's proximity to other Asian countries makes it an excellent hub for travel. Trips to Thailand, China, and Japan are the most common. Traveling within Korea is made easy by the clean, modern, and inexpensive public transportation system.

Why China?
The chance to experience 5,000 years of history while developing your career and skills in “The Middle Kingdom”, as the Chinese call their country, is an opportunity of a lifetime. You can explore one of the world’s most ancient civilizations and engage in the local culture as a welcomed insider (and get paid to do it). China has a thousand faces; from the Great Wall and serene deserts to urban centres bustling with bullet trains.

The most recent host of the summer Olympics, Beijing has sprouted new athletic facilities, hotels and restaurants that rival any in the world. An adventure awaits you down every city street and across the dynamic terrain that has something for every outdoor enthusiast. The Chinese are an amazing friendly people, who will no doubt welcome you with open arms.
